Tiles, Sintered Stone or Mosaics? How to Plan Your Selection

Learn what sintered stone is, then compare tiles, slabs and mosaics for your room. Plan sizes, joints, finishes and installation details before choosing samples.

Before you start

  • Start with the intended surface and conditions of use.
  • Compare joints, edges and installation details alongside colour.
  • Request the specification for the exact selected product.

What is sintered stone?

Sintered stone is a manufactured surface made by compacting mineral particles and heating them until they bond. Start with that material description, then check the exact collection, thickness, finish and intended use. A marble-look pattern describes appearance; it does not identify the material or establish its performance.

For a tiled or slab surface, compare piece sizes, joints and edge details. Mosaic layouts use smaller pieces and make the joint pattern more visible. Tell the supplier whether the surface is a wall, shower floor, worktop or outdoor area so the proposed product can be checked for that use.

Think about the finished layout

Look at the scale of the surface. Large pieces may reduce the number of visible joints, but openings, corners and handling still need a plan. Small mosaic pieces can create a detailed surface, with a joint pattern that becomes part of the appearance.

Ask the installer to review the layout before you order. Check where cut pieces will fall, how edges will finish and how the surface meets adjacent materials. For a patterned or bookmatched design, approve the face arrangement as well as the quantity.

Compare samples in the room palette

Place the shortlisted surface beside cabinetry, wall paint, metal finishes and any fixed materials. Compare sheen and texture under lighting similar to the intended room. A small sample helps with finish selection, but request larger images or a face layout when pattern variation matters.

Keep the sample code and finish name with the room reference. If you change one element later, revisit the combination before confirming the order.

Clarify the installation package

Ask what the quotation includes and which installation materials must be specified separately. Discuss support, substrate preparation, movement joints, adhesives or fixing systems with the responsible installer. A product photo cannot resolve these interfaces.

For wet or outdoor areas, request the applicable product suitability and performance information. Do not substitute a visual impression of roughness for evidence about the intended use.

Order by an agreed layout

Confirm quantities, cutting requirements and replacement pieces using the final layout. Record batch or shade information where relevant and agree how packages will be identified. Before installation, have the receiving team check the delivery against the approved reference and raise discrepancies before the material is fixed.

A useful surface-selection brief

  • Room and exact surface location.
  • Exposure, cleaning routine and intended use.
  • Layout dimensions, edges, openings and drainage details where relevant.
  • Approved sample and surrounding finish references.
  • Installer review, required documents and agreed order quantity.
