How to Estimate Tile Quantities & Allowance

Build a tile schedule from measured areas, the chosen layout and the supplier's pack coverage. Keep cutting allowance and spare stock visible, then round the order up to complete packs.

Layout / cut planning

Plan joints and perimeter cuts.

Straight lay · aligned joints
Offset lay · shifted joints

Check the starting line, edge cuts and reusable offcuts. Agree the offset, flatness and joint width with the installer.

Agree whether future repair stock is included in the allowance or recorded as a separate quantity. Keep shade, calibre and production-batch questions on the order list. Avoid counting the same reserve twice.

Calculation desk / metric and imperial

Keep the units consistent, then round once.

Worked exampleArea plus assumed allowanceRound to full boxes
Metric / 600 × 600 mm4 m × 3 m = 12 m². At an illustrative 10%: 13.20 m².4 tiles × 0.36 m² = 1.44 m²/box. 13.20 ÷ 1.44 = 9.167 → 10 boxes = 14.40 m².
Imperial / 12 × 24 in10 ft × 12 ft = 120 ft². At an illustrative 10%: 132 ft².6 tiles × 2 ft² = 12 ft²/box. 132 ÷ 12 = 11 boxes = 132 ft².
Metric / 300 × 600 mm5 m × 4 m = 20 m². At an illustrative 12%: 22.40 m².8 tiles × 0.18 m² = 1.44 m²/box. 22.40 ÷ 1.44 = 15.556 → 16 boxes = 23.04 m².

All tile sizes, pack counts and percentages above are calculation assumptions, not KUCI product specifications or recommended universal allowances. Use the supplier’s stated box coverage and the installer’s approved layout.

Conversion: 1 ft² = 0.09290304 m², so 120 ft² = 11.1483648 m². A nominal 600 × 600 mm tile is not exactly 24 × 24 inches; do not substitute one size for the other in a take-off.

Keep each tile selection on its own line.

Record each product code, finish, format and batch requirement separately, with the selected supplier’s dimensions and box coverage.

Format / nominal area

One piece is not one box.

Compare nominal piece areas before applying the supplier’s box coverage.

600 × 600 mm

0.60 × 0.60 = 0.36 m² per nominal piece.

600 × 1200 mm

0.60 × 1.20 = 0.72 m² per nominal piece.

Use the supplier’s confirmed coverage per box for the order. Joints, tolerances, pack quantities and the selected layout need their own review.

Estimate the box count.

Enter the measured area, installer-agreed cutting allowance, spare stock and supplier coverage per box.

Quantity inputs

The calculation sequence.

Use consistent units. 1 ft² = 0.09290304 m². Round only the final box count; confirm the supplier's stated pack coverage.

Net areaSum measured areas and subtract agreed untiled areas. Include returns, recesses and edge pieces where required by the actual layout.
Target areaNet area × (1 + cutting allowance / 100) + separate spare area. Do not count the same spare allowance twice.
Box countRound target area ÷ confirmed coverage per box upward to the next whole box.
Nominal piece checkRectangular tile area in m² = length in mm × width in mm ÷ 1,000,000. Divide target area by that area and round upward for an area-only piece estimate.
Order reconciliationUse supplier pack coverage and pack quantity for the order; nominal dimensions, joints, pattern mixes and manufacturing tolerances can make a simple piece calculation insufficient.

What changes the allowance?

Agree a layout-specific allowance with the installer and record the basis in the schedule.

Edges and obstructionsNiches, columns, diagonal cuts and small returns may create offcuts that cannot be reused elsewhere.
Pattern and directionBookmatching, directional veining, multi-size patterns and centred layouts need a piece-by-piece review.
Large formats and slabsConfirm usable dimensions, cut-outs, edge processing and handling with the fabricator; do not use this area calculator as a slab nesting or fabrication plan.
Spare stock and timingAgree the quantity of retained spare pieces separately. Check shade, batch and later replacement availability with the supplier.
