Bathroom Vanity Materials and Ordering Checklist
Compare bathroom vanity materials, finished heights, basins and mounting. Prepare a clear component schedule before requesting a quotation.

Before you start
- Identify the cabinet substrate separately from the visible finish.
- Check how the top, basin, plumbing and drawers fit together.
- Confirm mounting and included components before comparing prices.
A bathroom vanity is an assembly of cabinet, countertop, basin, hardware and sometimes a mirror. Compare those components separately before deciding which option suits the room. A material name on the front of a quotation may describe the door finish while saying very little about the cabinet beneath it.
Begin with the bathroom layout, expected water exposure and mounting arrangement. Then choose finishes within a specification that the installer can actually use.
Identify the cabinet construction
Ask the supplier to name the substrate, door construction, surface finish and edge treatment. PET, lacquer and wood grain film describe finishes or surface treatments; they do not fully identify the material supporting them.
For plywood or other wood based cabinets, review the grade and how edges, joints and plumbing penetrations are protected. For metal cabinets, identify the alloy, coatings, joints and internal reinforcement. Look at the hardware and fasteners as well as the visible panels.
Humidity, splashing and a persistent leak create different demands. A durable cabinet selection should be accompanied by sensible ventilation, maintenance and access to plumbing connections.
Match the top and basin to the way the room is used
Compare actual samples of ceramic, natural stone, solid surface and sintered products. Ask for cleaning instructions, fabrication details and repair options for the proposed material. Names such as “artificial stone” cover different compositions, so request the product description rather than relying on the category alone.
Decide between a vessel basin, undermount basin or integrated arrangement with the faucet position in view. Check usable counter space, splash behavior, the basin rim and access for cleaning. Ask how any joints are formed and maintained instead of assuming “seamless” means the assembly has no joints.
Check vanity height and mounting
A wall hung vanity needs a cabinet designed for that installation and suitable fixing into the actual wall construction. Removing legs from a floor standing model does not establish that it is suitable for suspension. Obtain the manufacturer's mounting details and have the installer confirm the support arrangement.
On the drawing, separate cabinet height, finished countertop height and basin rim height. A vessel basin adds height above the top, so review the whole assembly with the people who will use it. Check drawer clearance, tap position and access to the trap with your installer.
Compare the complete purchase scope
Ask the quotation to state whether it includes the mirror, basin, faucet, waste fitting, trap, mounting brackets, side cabinet and lighting. Record the exact models where compatibility matters. Confirm the number of packages, especially when glass and stone components are packed separately.
For custom dimensions, approve a drawing showing overall size, basin position, drawer arrangement and service openings. An increase in width can change more than the length of a countertop, so a price extrapolated from a showroom sample should be treated as an estimate until the construction is defined.
Inspect samples and finish references
Review a physical finish sample under the intended lighting and record its reference. Natural materials and production batches can vary; agree what variation is acceptable before manufacture. For repeat rooms, keep the approved sample available for comparison through the order.
Is a metal vanity maintenance free?
No. The grade, finish, joints and cleaning conditions matter. Follow the manufacturer's care instructions for the complete cabinet and hardware.
What should accompany a vanity inquiry?
Send the room plan, wall construction, desired dimensions, plumbing positions and selected basin and faucet. State whether you need a floor standing or wall hung installation so the quotation includes the right construction.
Ask for the vanity as a complete assembly
- Cabinet: substrate or metal specification, finish, edge treatment and internal reinforcement.
- Top and basin: dimensions, cutouts, mounting method and whether supplied separately.
- Hardware: hinges, drawer runners, handles and agreed spare parts.
- Installation: support requirements, wall suitability and plumbing access reviewed by the installer.
- Order scope: mirror, tap, waste fitting, brackets and fixings marked included or excluded.
